California is not one climate, and a balloon that flies happily in Fresno has a different life in Half Moon Bay.
The coast is a wind problem
Onshore afternoon wind is the defining feature of coastal California, and it is remarkably consistent. Calm mornings, building through the afternoon, dropping at dusk.
That is workable, but it means the 25 mph rule is a daily judgement rather than a rare one. Coastal customers tend to fly mornings and bring it in mid-afternoon, and their balloons last.
Inland is a heat problem
The Central Valley and the inland empire run hot for months. Heat thins the air, so the balloon sits slightly lower on its tether in the afternoon and firms up overnight.
Judge fill in the warm part of the day. Topping up a cool morning balloon is how people end up over-filled by two o’clock. This is the same advice we give in Phoenix, for the same reason.
Ask your city, not us
Sign rules are municipal in California and they vary a great deal between neighbouring cities. Some treat a tethered balloon as temporary signage, some as an attention-getting device, some not at all.
One phone call to your planning department settles it, and it is worth making before you order rather than after. We cannot answer it for you and anybody who says they can has not read your city’s code.
Getting it there
We build in Glendale, Arizona, so California is a short freight run. A folded 13-foot blimp is a manageable parcel rather than a pallet.
Helium you buy locally. Every California metro has welding-gas suppliers, and roughly $1.50 per cubic foot is a fair expectation.
